The Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk, emphasized on Friday that Ukraine must take responsibility for its history in order to join the European Union, in the context of tense diplomatic relations between the two countries. Tensions have risen after Polish President Karol Nawrocki withdrew an award given to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a reaction to the naming of a Ukrainian military unit after insurgents who committed massacres in Poland during World War II.

Tusk mentioned that he received positive signals following the meeting between the foreign ministers of Poland and Ukraine, but he stressed that Poland will act cautiously regarding financial support for Ukraine. Tusk also stated that Ukraine's accession to the EU involves not only adherence to rules but also building a community based on reconciliation.

In this context, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha proposed a package of anti-crisis measures but did not mention changing the name of the controversial military unit.
