During a hearing in the French Senate, Noël Corbin, the director of the General Inspection of Cultural Affairs, stated that the thieves who stole jewelry from the Louvre on October 19 could have been stopped just 30 seconds before escaping. The main issue was the lack of a quick response from security agents, who did not watch the footage captured by the surveillance cameras live.
Senator Laurent Lafon emphasized that this robbery was not an accidental incident, but the result of poor decisions regarding the museum's security. Additionally, a communication problem regarding security audits was highlighted, especially after the change in museum leadership in 2021. Following the incident, the Minister of Culture ordered emergency measures to improve security, but museum employees are dissatisfied with the lack of resources.
Hearings will continue, including with the former president of the Louvre, Jean-Luc Martinez, to clarify the security deficiencies identified in the past.
