The Scottish Wildlife Trust has announced a ranger position for Handa Island, an uninhabited island in the northwest of Scotland, with a six-month contract from March to September. Life on the island is isolated, with no access to shops or modern services, and the ranger will have complex responsibilities, including monitoring wildlife, coordinating volunteers, and managing visitors.
The island, known for its biodiversity, is home to tens of thousands of seabirds and offers a unique experience of cohabitation with nature. The ranger will live alongside volunteers, without the usual privacy, and will need to manage supplies and other logistical tasks. The annual salary is £26,112, prorated for the duration of employment, and accommodation is provided. The last permanent resident left the island in the 19th century, allowing nature to take over.
