The mayor of the city of Silistra, Aleksandăr Sabanov, declared a state of emergency in the Srebarna Natural Reserve in Bulgaria, from July 14-21, due to alarmingly low water levels in the lake. The decision was made following a warning issued by the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water in Ruse, which reported serious risks to the reserve's ecosystem. The water level has dropped to approximately 80 centimeters, nearly one meter below the optimal level.

The authorities expected the Danube to rise to replenish the water supply, but the low level of the river has prevented this. Although no major damage to flora and fauna has been reported, experts warn that prolonged drought could affect the ecosystem. As an immediate measure, water will be pumped from the Danube into the reserve, and in the long term, the construction of a solar-powered pumping station is planned. The reserve, included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, hosts rich biodiversity, being an essential habitat for endangered species.
