Japan's Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, pleaded on Monday, in a speech delivered in parliament, for the building of a constructive and stable relationship with China, which she called “an important neighbor.” The statement comes amid diplomatic tensions sparked by her remarks about Japan's possible intervention in the event of an attack on Taiwan.
Takaichi said that Tokyo would maintain communication with Beijing and promote dialogue to protect national interests and manage common challenges. However, the Japanese prime minister specified that Japan would firmly uphold its positions and demand responsible behavior from China.
Relations between the two major Asian economies deteriorated after Takaichi suggested in November last year that Japan might intervene militarily if Taiwan were attacked. Beijing claims the island as part of its territory.
Subsequently, China warned its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan and imposed trade restrictions that affected rare-earth deliveries to Japanese companies.
