Hurricane Melissa, a category 5 storm, directly hit Jamaica, causing devastating damage and a significant number of casualties. So far, at least 25 deaths have been reported in Haiti, 8 in Jamaica, and 1 in the Dominican Republic. Although the hurricane has been downgraded to category 1, it continues to generate strong winds of 155 km/h. In Haiti, approximately 12,000 people are in emergency shelters, and communities are facing an increased number of casualties, including an entire family that was destroyed.

In Jamaica, recovery efforts have begun in severely affected parishes, where Melissa destroyed homes, uprooted trees, and caused flooding. Prime Minister Andrew Holness has promised an effective recovery strategy, but residents are calling for urgent assistance. Norman Manley International Airport has reopened for relief flights, and authorities have begun assessing the damage. Western regions, such as St James and St Elizabeth, have been severely affected, and the United States and the United Kingdom have promised support for recovery efforts.
