On Tuesday, hundreds of women from Mexico City took to the streets to protest against gender violence, an alarming phenomenon that kills, on average, ten women a day, according to official data. The protest was a reaction to the rising level of violence, and President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a national campaign against sexual harassment, initiated after she was a victim of a public assault. Sheinbaum proposed a plan that includes prison sentences for sexual abuse and encourages women to report incidents. One protester highlighted the difficulties encountered in the justice system, mentioning that the man who assaulted her is still free, and many women find themselves having to conduct their own investigations. According to the UN, 70% of Mexican women over the age of 15 have been victims of sexual abuse.
