Authorities in California have reported a case of plague near Lake Tahoe, where a patient has fallen ill, possibly after being bitten by a flea. The patient is recovering at home. El Dorado County's acting director of Public Health emphasized the importance of outdoor precautions since plague, caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, is present in the area. Although rare, cases of plague are treatable with antibiotics if diagnosed early. The authorities recommend the use of repellents and anti-parasite treatments for animals.
