The authorities in Basel have reported an outbreak of legionellosis, with 26 confirmed cases, including one death. The disease, caused by the bacteria Legionella pneumophila, affects the lungs and is transmitted through inhalation of contaminated aerosols. Nine of the patients are hospitalized, and one is in intensive care.

Most cases have been recorded in a neighborhood in Basel, but isolated cases have also been reported in other areas of the city. Authorities are investigating common sources of contamination, focusing on cooling towers that operate with water. Of the 10 facilities analyzed, eight exceeded the limit of Legionella bacteria, and two were shut down after showing high concentrations of the bacteria. Authorities recommend that the population consult a doctor in case of pneumonia symptoms.
