Paul McCartney, former member of the band The Beatles, has joined a group of British parliamentarians calling on Brussels to abandon an initiative that would ban names associated with meat, such as 'burger' or 'sausage', for plant-based products. According to the proposed legislation, producers would no longer be able to use terms like 'vegan burger' or 'vegan sausage'. McCartney, a vegetarian since 1975, emphasized that names should clearly reflect the content of the products to avoid consumer confusion and promote health and sustainability.
Eight British parliamentarians, including Jeremy Corbyn, have signed a letter to Brussels, warning that the legislation could undermine economic growth and sustainability goals. The initiative is part of an amendment proposed by a French MEP and is currently under negotiation at the level of the EU Council of Ministers. British parliamentarians are concerned that a potential ban could also affect supermarkets in the UK, given that European markets are interconnected.
