Interim Defense Minister Radu Miruță announced the signing of a contract with the US company US Ballistic to build an ammunition plant at the Sadu Mechanical Plant in Gorj County. The investment, presented in Târgu Jiu, will focus on producing NATO-standard 155 mm ammunition and marks the expansion of Romania’s defense industry capabilities.

According to the minister, the US company will invest $25 million over the next five years and hire 150 people in the first two years, with the number of employees set to increase gradually over the following four years. The project also includes investments in infrastructure, repairs to storage facilities, roads and utilities, which will remain the property of the Sadu Mechanical Plant.

The agreement provides for the transfer of technology to the Romanian facility and the payment of approximately €20 million in rent to the Sadu Mechanical Plant over the next ten years. The first year’s rent will be paid in advance.

Radu Miruță said the project was initiated while he was leading the Ministry of Economy and was subsequently continued by Irineu Darău. The minister maintains that the investment is bringing Sadu back to the center of Romania’s defense industry, after a period in which the plant recorded significant losses, including annual security costs of approximately €500,000.
