Radu Oprea received a favorable endorsement, with 21 votes in favor and 17 against, after presenting his priorities for the defense industry and the equipment of the Romanian Army. He argued that Romania must produce more, but above all develop projects that generate added value for the national economy.
Oprea mentioned the 47 million euro in European funding for a project being carried out together with Rheinmetall and called for its acceleration, as well as that of other initiatives considered important for Romania. He emphasized the need for well-defined industrial cooperation agreements, so that every equipment contract specifies the benefits for the local economy, the financial impact and technological progress.
The directions outlined include developing the production of ammunition, maintenance, logistics and the equipment needed by the Romanian Army. Oprea also discussed the European SAFE, ASAP and EDIP programs, as well as cooperation with companies from member states to develop drones and counter-drone systems.
Regarding NATO commitments, Oprea said that the future state budget law must include an increase in defense spending to 5% by 2031, in accordance with the decision adopted in The Hague. He also highlighted the role of the strategic partnership with the United States in Romania’s security. The development of military capabilities must be accompanied, Oprea added, by improving the quality of life of military personnel and by respect for them, including after the end of their careers.
