Nepal's tourism ministry will allow free access to 97 Himalayan mountains for the next two years in a bid to boost tourism in less developed regions. The move comes amid an increase in fees for Everest climbing permits to $15,000. Although mountaineering generates significant revenue, the number of tourists to lesser-known peaks is low. The authorities have not clarified plans to improve infrastructure to support a possible influx of climbers.
