Neil Young filed a lawsuit on Monday against a fundraising committee affiliated with Donald Trump, seeking $10 million in damages for using the song “Rockin’ in the Free World” at an election rally held on October 12 in Ohio.
The artist claims that the song, released in 1989 and critical of George H. W. Bush’s administration, represents values opposed to those promoted by Trump. Young stated that he did not authorize the use of the song in political campaigns and that the former U.S. president knew his consent was required.
The complaint refers to a similar incident in 2020, when “Rockin’ in the Free World” and “Devil’s Sidewalk” were used. According to Silver Fiddle Music, the two parties reached an agreement at the time, accompanied by a promise that the situation would not happen again.
Neil Young, who supported Joe Biden in 2020 and Kamala Harris in 2024, had previously publicly protested the use of his music. Other artists, including Rihanna, Adele, and Ariana Grande, have also opposed the use of their songs in Republican campaigns.
