U.S. President Donald Trump launched a new verbal attack on Norway on Sunday during an election rally held in Port Huron, Michigan, ahead of the midterm elections. Trump linked his criticism to the fact that he did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize and said he no longer wanted Norwegian immigrants in the United States.
“Because I didn’t receive the Nobel Prize… So I don’t want anybody from Norway,” the American leader said, according to Reuters. He later called Norway “a shithole country,” repeating a derogatory expression he had previously used in reference to countries such as Haiti, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.
The statements were not accompanied by any announcement of official measures to restrict immigration from Norway. Reuters notes that there are no indications that the U.S. administration is preparing a policy change concerning Norwegian citizens.
Trump has repeatedly criticized the decision not to award him the prize, describing it as “an indelible stain” on Norway. The prize is awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, an institution independent of the government in Oslo. The committee is appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, but the decision on the laureate belongs to the committee.
