Donald Trump defended his candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize at the White House on Wednesday, two days before this year’s laureate is announced in Oslo. The American president claims he deserves the distinction for what he considers to be his contributions to ending conflicts and preventing global threats.
Trump stated that he had ended “eight wars” and that he had “prevented the total destruction of the world,” claiming that Iran would never possess a nuclear weapon. The statements were also used to justify the war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran in February 2026.
“I don’t know what their decision will be. They have a reputation for not awarding it to people like me,” Trump said, referring to the Nobel Committee. He said it would be “a great shame” if he did not receive the prize this year either.
Trump is running for the distinction for the second time. Last year, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, who symbolically presented the medal to the American president.
