South African jurist Navi Pillay joked about Donald Trump’s desire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize after learning on Friday that she is this year’s laureate. The moment took place in Nuremberg, during a summit dedicated to international law, and was filmed by Agnes Callamard, the secretary general of Amnesty International.
“If you applaud a little louder, I might share the prize with Trump,” Pillay said, prompting laughter and applause. Aged 85, she jokingly added that she wanted to verify whether the news was true, given her experience as a lawyer and judge.
Pillay also referred to her recent work concerning the war in the Gaza Strip. She led the UN’s independent international commission of inquiry that accused Israel of genocide in Gaza.
The joke comes after Donald Trump repeatedly claimed that he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. The American president maintains that he contributed to ending or preventing several conflicts, including preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
Last year’s laureate, Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, presented the medal to American President Donald Trump in January.
