In 2023, four regions in Greece and two in Romania had the lowest motorization rates in the EU, while Italy dominates with the highest values

According to Eurostat, the average car ownership rate in the European Union in 2023 was 0.55 cars per inhabitant, down from 2022. The lowest motorization rates were recorded in four regions in Greece and two in Romania. In contrast, Italy had the highest, with Valle d'Aosta having 2,295 cars per thousand inhabitants. Regions in the Netherlands and Sweden stand out with a high share of electric cars, while Greece and several other countries have close to zero. Romania has a share of electric cars between 0.1% and 1%.
