Romania's auto market: Significant increase in registrations in 2026

The car market in Romania recorded, in June 2026, 16,008 cars, an increase of 53% compared to the same period in 2025, according to statistics from the General Directorate of Driving Licenses and Registrations.


The SUV segment dominates the market with a share of 58.5%, followed by Class C (21%) and Class B (12.8%). Gasoline engines increased by 45%, reaching 31%, while diesel engines decreased by 25.7%, to 4.4%. Electrified cars, including mild-hybrids, reached a market share of 64%, surpassing traditional engines.


The best-selling electric cars are the Tesla Model Y, Model 3, and BYD Dolphin Surf. In the hybrid segment, the Toyota Corolla is the leader, followed by the Toyota Yaris Cross and Dacia Duster.


Additionally, light commercial vehicles increased by 2%, while heavy vehicles rose by 35% compared to the previous year.
