In a surprising change on the diplomatic scene, Kirilo Budanov, advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that Russia would be willing to accept the post-war security proposals formulated by the United States. This was communicated following recent discussions in Geneva, where the Russian delegation indicated that it might accept the security guarantees offered to Ukraine. Budanov emphasized that the Kremlin seems to realize the necessity of accepting these arrangements, although it previously rejected the idea of Ukraine joining NATO. Despite the moderate optimism, the discussions have been described as difficult, and the main points of tension remain the nature of the guarantees requested by Ukraine and the lack of an agreement regarding a direct meeting between Zelensky and Putin. Ukraine is demanding solid guarantees that would involve military actions from the U.S. and European allies in the event of new Russian aggression.
Additionally, the details of the American plan accepted by Russia remain confidential, and any peace agreement without a clear mechanism to deter a future invasion is considered unacceptable by Kyiv.
It remains to be seen whether the progress reported by Budanov will translate into an official agreement or if it is merely a diplomatic maneuver in the current context of the conflict.
