On Saturday, thousands of people took to the streets in Mexico City to protest against corruption, crime, and impunity, with the initiative being led by young people from Generation Z, but also having considerable support from older supporters. The protest was generally peaceful, but resulted in isolated incidents between protesters and law enforcement, resulting in 120 injuries, of which 100 were police officers, and 20 arrests.
This mobilization is part of a global wave of protests by Generation Z, addressing issues such as inequality and corruption. Young people in Mexico feel frustrated by persistent structural problems, demanding more security. Among the participants were also older individuals who supported causes such as funding for the public health system.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, despite criticism and recent high-profile crimes, enjoys a high level of approval. She accused right-wing parties of trying to infiltrate the youth movement. The protest was characterized by intergenerational participation, with people of all ages expressing their dissatisfaction with the current situation in the country.
