The President of Madagascar, Andry Rajoelina, fled the country with the help of a French military plane, following violent uprisings that led to dozens of deaths. The uprisings began on September 25, fueled by discontent over corruption and lack of basic services. Rajoelina lost the support of an elite military unit, and the opposition initiated impeachment proceedings. The Senate has already announced his removal from office, appointing Jean Andre Ndremanjary as interim president. Madagascar is facing a severe economic crisis, with a large part of the population living in poverty.
