Authorities in France ordered on Friday the total evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula, a popular tourist destination on the Atlantic coast, due to rapidly spreading wildfires. The prefect of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, Sophie Brocas, stated that everyone in the area must leave either by evacuation boats or via the only road connecting the peninsula to the mainland. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez confirmed that approximately 40,000 people have been evacuated. The fire has advanced by up to 1,000 hectares per hour, and another hotspot is affecting the area near the locality of Biscarrosse. President Emmanuel Macron announced the activation of the European Union's civil protection mechanism to obtain air support, including planes and helicopters from other European countries. Macron emphasized that the situation remains extremely tense in the Gironde department.
