Radu Mazăre, the former mayor of Constanța, was conditionally released on May 27, 2024, after five years of detention. After his release, he decided to settle in Madagascar, where he started an ambitious project: building a four-star resort. Mazăre recounted that he discovered the place in 2011 while practicing kitesurfing, and decided to develop a tourist complex in the deserted area. Completing the project was a challenge, as he faced difficulties in obtaining construction materials and finding skilled workers. The resort includes 16 bungalows on 1.8 hectares, leased from a local tribe, with an initial investment of 1.3 million euros. Although he was convicted for fraudulent restitution in Romania, Mazăre is now focusing on business in Madagascar. Recently, the Constanța Court of Appeal decided to confiscate 160,000 euros from his assets, considering that the money was obtained unjustly. Mazăre did not appear in court to justify the origin of the funds.
