Karsheninnikov, a volcano on Russia's Kamchatka peninsula, recently erupted for the first time in more than 450 years, shortly after a powerful earthquake. The volcano emits an ash plume that reaches 6,000 meters (20,000 feet), directed east towards the Pacific Ocean, without affecting residential areas. The peninsula is known for its seismic and volcanic activity, with around thirty active volcanoes. The last eruption of Karsheninnikov was recorded in 1550, and recently there have been signs of intense geological activity, including eruptions of other volcanoes in the region.
