Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba suffered a significant electoral defeat, losing his majority in the Senate, complicating the political situation in Japan. The Liberal Democratic Liberal Party (LDP) and its ally Komeito won just 47 of the 125 seats up for renewal, below the threshold needed to maintain control. This, combined with inflation and the rise of the extremist Sanseito party, has led to speculation that Ishiba may resign, although he has said he intends to stay in office. Japan now faces a minority government in both houses of parliament, a first since World War II.
