The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, stated that the government is considering reducing fuel excise duties, using the higher revenues from the value-added tax (VAT) generated by the increase in pump prices.

Excise duties, which constitute a significant part of the final price of fuels, are applied per liter. Meloni mentioned that the Ministry of Economy is analyzing the activation of a mechanism called "mobile excise duties," which would allow the use of additional VAT revenues to reduce excise duties on gasoline and diesel. The employers' organization CGIA Mestre warned that the increase in energy bills, caused by the conflict in the Middle East, could cost Italian companies nearly 10 billion euros. Additionally, consumer and transport groups have called for an immediate reduction in excise duties, highlighting the significant financial impact on operating costs.
