NetBlocks reported an internet shutdown in Iran, considered a measure of digital censorship aimed at limiting public communication during the protests. These began at the end of December in response to the rising cost of living and the devaluation of the local currency, resulting in at least 21 deaths, including members of the security forces.
The Iranian authorities have had contradictory reactions, with President Masoud Pezeshkian calling for restraint, while the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, stated that protesters must be "put in their place." Another judge, Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, warned that there would be no leniency for those who provoke insecurity.
In this context, UN chief Antonio Guterres emphasized the importance of respecting the right to freedom of expression and called on the authorities to allow peaceful protests.
