The Iranian government announced that, prior to negotiations with the United States in Switzerland, it observed a relaxation of the American position on the nuclear issue. The spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baqaei, stated that, following discussions in February in Oman, the American position has become more realistic.
Iran defends its right to civilian nuclear energy under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and is willing to make compromises regarding its stock of enriched uranium, in exchange for the lifting of sanctions imposed by the U.S.
The Deputy Foreign Minister, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, confirmed these intentions in an interview. A new round of discussions is scheduled to take place in Geneva, although the exact date has not been specified.
