Iran received on Wednesday, September 30, the official response from the United States to its latest offer regarding ending the war in the Middle East, the Tehran government announced, without disclosing the document’s contents.
The American proposal was presented to President Massoud Pezeshkian by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during a meeting of the Council of Ministers. The response was delivered after Iran had formulated its own conditions for ending hostilities and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran resumed last week in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, after more than seven months of conflict and diplomatic deadlock. Tehran announced seven conditions, some of which have not been made public. The known demands include ending hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon, unfreezing Iranian assets abroad, lifting sanctions on the oil sector, and removing the American blockade.
President Donald Trump publicly rejected the proposal on Saturday, but Iran was awaiting an official response delivered through mediators from Qatar. The Strait of Hormuz was closed by Tehran after the war was launched by the United States and Israel at the end of February. Subsequently, Washington imposed a blockade on Iranian ports and extensive sanctions.
A lull has been observed on the ground in recent weeks, but the United States has intensified its economic pressure on Iran. Diplomatic talks remain uncertain.
