Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Monday, October 5, that negotiations with the United States “make no sense,” accusing Washington of attacking Iran three times after rounds of talks. The statement was broadcast by Iranian state television IRIB and reported by AFP.
“This shows that they are not seeking dialogue,” Pezeshkian said. The Tehran leader accused the United States of assassinations, sanctions and constant pressure, and argued that Washington does not honor its commitments.
His position comes after several attempts to resume dialogue. The United States and Iran agreed to a ceasefire in April, signed a memorandum of understanding in June and held talks in September on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. Officials from the two countries met again at the end of September in New York.
The talks were blocked mainly by the dispute over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran proposed reopening it within seven days in exchange for the lifting of US economic sanctions, but Donald Trump rejected the offer while keeping open the possibility of indirect negotiations.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said there was no military solution or solution based on new sanctions. Meanwhile, Washington imposed new sanctions on Iran’s aviation sector, and the United States has not attacked Iran since September 1.
