Iran is facing difficulties in opening the Strait of Hormuz for more intense maritime traffic, due to its inability to locate and remove the mines placed in the area, according to American officials cited by The New York Times. This situation complicates negotiations between the US and Iran, which are set to take place with mediation from Pakistan.

Iran has used small vessels to mine the strait, and threats from drones and missiles have drastically reduced the number of ships passing through the area. Additionally, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard has warned that ships could collide with the sea mines, and the published maps indicate safe routes, limited by the random placement of the mines.

In a social media post, President Trump stated that a ceasefire depends on the complete opening of the strait. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi mentioned that the opening of the strait will take into account "technical limitations," referring to Iran's inability to manage the mines. Trump accused allies of lacking the will to clear the strait, stating that demining operations began as a gesture of goodwill.
