The Hungarian government, led by Prime Minister Peter Magyar, has adopted a resolution that restricts the issuance of residence permits for immigrants from outside the European Union, starting from Saturday.
This measure, which has already been published in the Official Gazette, eliminates a residence permit scheme introduced by the previous government led by Viktor Orban, but does not completely stop the issuance of permits. Documents already issued remain valid until expiration, and the decision does not clarify the possibility of extending them.
Currently, approximately 90,000 employees from outside the EU work in Hungary, mostly in industries such as automotive, construction, and agriculture, coming from countries like the Philippines, Ukraine, China, Vietnam, and India. Magyar justified the restrictions by the need to protect jobs for Hungarian citizens and to prevent wage decreases. However, employer associations warn of the labor force shortage felt in various sectors.
