Xi Jinping had a rare meeting with Cheng Li-wun, the president of the Nationalist Party of Taiwan (KMT), in Beijing, marking the first visit by an opposition leader from Taiwan to China in the last ten years. The two leaders expressed their desire to promote peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, in the context of Beijing having cut communications with Taiwan after the election of President Tsai Ing-wen in 2016.
Xi emphasized that Taiwan's future does not lie in Washington, but in Beijing, and reiterated China's willingness to collaborate with the KMT, provided that it opposes Taiwan's independence. Cheng stated that opposition to Taiwan's independence is essential for maintaining peace. The meeting highlighted Xi's efforts to influence Taiwanese politics through dialogue with parties favoring closer relations with Beijing, while the ruling Democratic Progressive Party continues to reject China's claims over the island. Cheng also suggested an invitation for Xi to visit Taiwan in the future.
