In an interview with POLITICO, Greenland's Minister of Mineral Resources, Naaja Nathanielsen, stated that her country will not accept external control over its mineral resources, emphasizing that sovereignty is non-negotiable. Her statements came after discussions between U.S. President Donald Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, which addressed the future of the island's resources. Nathanielsen challenged their right to decide the fate of the Greenlandic mining sector, asserting that any agreement allowing other countries to control the island's minerals is unacceptable.

Greenland possesses valuable resources but has not yet begun their extraction. Although Nathanielsen mentioned the possibility of multilateral discussions to resolve the resource issue, she emphasized that there will be no compromise on sovereignty. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but stated that there is a way to collaborate with the U.S. In the context of the EU seeking to improve raw material supply chains, Greenland is in a strategic position but remains cautious in its relationship with the U.S.
