Farmers in Greece have revolted due to delays in the payment of European agricultural subsidies, breaking through security barriers and entering the runway of the Nikos Kazantzakis international airport in Heraklion. Law enforcement intervened with tear gas and stun grenades, but some protesters managed to breach the police cordons. At the airport in Chania, the protests escalated, with farmers throwing stones and overturning a police vehicle, resulting in the injury of two people.
These protests are fueled by delays in subsidy payments, which affect the preparation of land for the agricultural season. The government has temporarily suspended payments for further checks, following an investigation by the European Public Prosecutor's Office that uncovered a scheme of fraud and money laundering, leading to the resignation of five officials and the closure of the agency responsible for managing the subsidies.
