The Colosseum in Rome, a symbol of history, is facing increasingly serious security problems, culminating in a recent attack in which young people injured police officers using fireworks.

The authorities have declared the area a “red zone” to intensify security measures, mobilizing additional forces to combat crimes, including theft and drug trafficking.

These measures, which include a constant police and military presence, were implemented amid an increase in the number of visitors and criminal incidents.

Lamberto Giannini, Rome’s security chief, emphasized that the new metro station at the Colosseum has become an access route for marginalized young people who commit robberies.

The “red zone” ordinance grants officers increased powers to intervene in cases of disorder.

A report is expected in September to assess the impact of these measures on crime.
