The financial evaluation agency Fitch Ratings has confirmed Bulgaria's sovereign rating at 'BBB plus', with a stable outlook, but has revised downwards the budget deficit forecasts, anticipating a deepening of it to 3.2% of GDP in 2026 and 4.3% in 2027. Fitch emphasized that the recent resignation of the Government reflects difficulties in implementing the necessary structural reforms, which could affect economic growth, although Bulgaria's accession to the eurozone is not in danger.
The agency also noted that public debt remains low, below 30% of GDP, but political instability could undermine the necessary fiscal adjustments. Despite these challenges, Fitch has improved the GDP growth forecast for 2025 to 3.3%, due to rising wages and consumption, but has reduced estimates for 2026 and 2027 to 2.7%. Political uncertainties and delays in absorbing European funds could negatively affect the country's economic prospects.
