Finland announced on Monday the creation of a maritime surveillance center aimed at protecting critical underwater infrastructure in the Gulf of Finland, following a series of attacks on electrical cables, telecommunications links, and gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. Finnish authorities emphasize the need to have intervention capability in territorial waters and the exclusive economic zone. These attacks have intensified since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, prompting NATO to increase its presence in the region with ships, aircraft, and drones.
Additionally, at the beginning of the year, NATO sent 10 military ships to the Baltic Sea to deter sabotage. In a previous incident, the Finnish Police confiscated a cargo ship suspected of damaging an underwater cable, but later lifted the seizure of the vessel.
