Finland has decided to lift the long-standing ban on the presence of nuclear weapons on its territory, according to an announcement made by the Finnish government. This legislative change, necessary to support Finland's military defense within NATO, could allow the deployment of atomic bombs during a conflict. The 1987 law prohibited the import and possession of nuclear weapons, but is now seen as a clause that would benefit Russia in the event of war. Finland, which has a 1,340-kilometer border with Russia, joined NATO in 2023 in response to the invasion of Ukraine. The policy change comes amid closer cooperation in the field of nuclear deterrence in Europe, in the context of increased threats from Russia and instability in the Middle East. Finland has signed a defense pact with the United States, which allows the use of Finnish military facilities. This decision reflects a broader shift in European security policy, especially in the face of current challenges.
