The European Parliament supports the initiative "My Voice, My Choice" for access to safe abortion in the EU

Brussels, November 5, 2025 – The Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM) of the European Parliament has adopted a resolution supporting the European citizens' initiative "My Voice, My Choice: for safe and accessible abortion", which has gathered over a million signatures across the European Union.

The report, approved with 26 votes in favor, 12 against, and no abstentions, calls on the European Commission to propose a financial solidarity mechanism among member states to ensure equal access to safe abortion services. The mechanism would be optional ("opt-in") and supported by European funds, allowing participating states to provide assistance to individuals who cannot access these services in their own country.

The adopted text highlights that, in several member states, women continue to face legal and administrative barriers in exercising their reproductive rights, despite commitments made at the European and international levels. MEPs urge countries that restrict access to abortion to align their legislation with the standards of the World Health Organization and the UN regarding sexual and reproductive health.

After the vote, the rapporteur Abir Al-Sahlani (Renew, Sweden) stated:

"No woman should have to leave her country to exercise her fundamental rights. Reproductive care is a basic human right. This initiative shows that when citizens mobilize, Europe can respond and act for equality and democracy."

The FEMM Committee warns of the increasing anti-women's rights reactions and movements that challenge gender equality, emphasizing the need for joint action at the European level to protect the freedom of choice and reproductive health.

The "My Voice, My Choice" initiative was officially validated by the European Commission on September 1, 2025, after verifying the signatures. A public hearing is set to take place on December 2, 2025, and the plenary of Parliament will debate and vote on a corresponding resolution in the December session.

Although Romanian legislation allows for abortion, actual access to safe and affordable medical services varies significantly, especially in rural areas. The mechanism proposed by the European Parliament could support the funding of clinics and the training of medical staff, reducing territorial inequalities.
