Dan Wilson, a member of the far-right militia Oath Keepers, entered the Capitol wearing a gas mask during the attack on January 6, 2021. Although he was pardoned by President Trump on January 21, along with 1,500 other rioters, Wilson remained in prison for illegal possession of firearms, with a five-year sentence set to end in 2028.
His pardon was considered "total and unconditional" and was supported by his lawyers, who highlighted the excesses that divided the nation. Although the Trump administration initially stated that the pardon did not cover the conviction for possession of firearms, the Department of Justice reversed this decision, stating that the pardon also applies to firearm-related offenses. The Capitol attack resulted in five deaths and injured nearly 140 police officers, and over 1,500 people were arrested in the wake of these violent events.
