Following the killing of far-right activist Quentin Deranque, a diplomatic conflict erupted on Thursday between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and French President Emmanuel Macron. Meloni stated that Deranque's death is "a wound for all of Europe," which provoked Macron's reaction, who accused Meloni of interfering in France's internal affairs.
Macron emphasized that nationalists who do not want to be disturbed at home are often the first to comment on other countries. The activist's killing occurred during a scuffle at a conference, and Macron called for the political extremes in France to settle their scores. The mayor of Lyon, Grégory Doucet, requested a ban on a march in support of the deceased activist, scheduled for Saturday. The two leaders, with a tense relationship on issues such as migration and abortion, will meet in April at a Franco-Italian summit in Toulouse.
