On Sunday, Chileans head to the polls to elect their president, and for the first time since the end of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship, the far right, represented by the ultraconservative José Antonio Kast, is leading in the polls. Kast, a 59-year-old lawyer, has gained popularity through his campaign focused on combating crime and the promise to expel illegal migrants, especially Venezuelans. On the other side, Jeannette Jara, a moderate communist and former Minister of Labor, proposes increasing the minimum wage and protecting pensions. Over 15.6 million voters are expected to cast their ballots, and polling stations open at 08:00 local time.
