In Cuba, an outbreak of viruses transmitted by mosquitoes, especially chikungunya and dengue, has led to the death of 33 people, of which 21 are children. Health authorities have emphasized that the majority of deaths are caused by chikungunya, a disease that causes fever and severe joint pain, but is rarely fatal. The outbreaks have occurred in the context of a deep economic crisis, with shortages of water, food, and medicine, and authorities are calling for preventive measures and mosquito control. Chikungunya was detected for the first time in Matanzas province in July and has spread rapidly to all 15 provinces of the country. Additionally, Cuba is facing an outbreak of dengue, while poor hygiene conditions and water storage in tanks contribute to the proliferation of mosquitoes. American sanctions and the impact of Covid-19 on tourism have worsened the situation, affecting medical services and prevention programs.
