Keir Starmer resigns his seat as an MP. When will the by-election take place?

The by-election to replace Keir Starmer in the House of Commons is expected to take place on 8 October in the Holborn and St Pancras constituency in central London, following the former prime minister’s resignation as an MP. The contest is expected to be between the governing Labour Party and the Green Party.

The Labour Party began the parliamentary procedure on Monday to organize the election after the seat became vacant. The party will select its candidate on Wednesday, while the Greens will announce their candidate’s name on 11 September.

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has submitted his candidacy for the nomination. He faces Hamza Chowdhury, a councillor in the Camden Green constituency.

Keir Starmer resigned from the House of Commons last week, saying that he wanted to focus more on international affairs, although he had previously promised to remain an MP until the next general election. In the 2024 election, he won the seat with a majority of 11,572 votes.

The election will take place less than a week after the Greens’ conference in Brighton, scheduled for 2–4 October, and immediately after the Labour conference in Liverpool, held from 27 to 30 September.
