The Labour Party, led by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, could include reversing Brexit in its election platform

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has not ruled out including the UK’s return to the European Union in the Labour Party’s next election manifesto, but said the immediate priority is strengthening relations with the bloc. He made the statement on Monday, during a flight to New York, where he is attending the UN General Assembly.

Burnham is due to hold his first meeting with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, on Tuesday. He said the British Government is currently focusing on organizing a UK-EU summit, which could take place by the end of the year, and on securing trade agreements capable of supporting the British economy.

The Prime Minister said he would, for the time being, respect the red lines on Brexit set by former Prime Minister Keir Starmer, but is under pressure from Labour lawmakers who support reversing the UK’s withdrawal from the EU. They cite, among other things, the potential for an economic revival.

Burnham also announced that he would discuss with von der Leyen the “Made in Europe” legislation, intended to limit China’s influence but which could affect British industry and supply chains. The negotiations also include the EU’s request for youth mobility.
