Britain and the European Union are discussing options for restoring the free movement of people and strengthening relations between the two blocs, according to the British publication The Times. The options being negotiated by officials in London and Brussels are expected to be made public in a few weeks, after they have been agreed by both sides.
The talks are taking place ahead of an official announcement by British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who intends to present his vision for closer ties with the European Union. The options could include the prospect of Britain rejoining the EU in the long term, although no such decision would be proposed during the current parliamentary term.
Burnham is due to meet European leaders in Brussels on November 20, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The summit is expected to produce agreements on standards for food and drink, as well as progress under the “Made in Europe” scheme, affecting British producers, particularly the automotive industry.
The prime minister said that restoring free movement should be decided by referendum. He argues that Brexit reduced control over immigration, undermined agreements on the return of migrants and contributed to the small-boat crisis in the English Channel. The proposals could be included in the Labour Party’s election manifesto for the general election scheduled to take place by 2029.
