Andy Burnham, the mayor of the Greater Manchester region, won the decisive by-elections in Makerfield with a clear majority, defeating the Reform UK party candidate, Robert Kenyon.
Andy Burnham stated that his victory in the by-elections represents "the last chance for the Labour Party to change," thus paving the way for a challenge to Keir Starmer's position as leader. He emphasized the need to build a politics based on unity and hope, moving away from the divisions seen in American politics.
Burnham, who received 6,100 more votes than the total of the Reform UK and Restore Britain parties, is considered a strong candidate for the position of prime minister, should a competition for the leadership of the Labour Party arise. He also promised to fight for equity for regions neglected by Westminster, stating that voters feel "neglected" by the government.
His victory will open a new battle for retaining the position of mayor of Greater Manchester, with elections scheduled for July 30, where approximately two million voters are expected.
