Andy Burnham, known as the "King of the North", will be elected on Friday as the leader of the Labour Party, following overwhelming support from Labour MPs. This event marks an important step towards becoming the seventh Prime Minister of Great Britain in the last decade, in the context of the rise of the populist party Reform UK.
Burnham, at the age of 56, has recently returned to Parliament and has outlined an agenda aimed at a "rebalancing of power" from London to the regions of Great Britain, to reduce inequalities and counter the popularity of the Reform UK party. With general elections scheduled for 2029, Burnham will need to act quickly to implement his promises, in a context where Nigel Farage, the leader of Reform, has gained significant financial support.
